BRINGING TOGETHER BUYERS AND SELLERS FOR 50 YEARS!
Created by the merger of two industry giants, Miller Freeman's Merchandise Group is the leading producer of trade shows, publications, and on-line marketplaces in the variety and general merchandise industry.
PAST
The first Variety Merchandise Show was produced nearly 50 years ago by Arthur Tarshis, his daughter Beth Thalheim and her husband Jay Thalheim. In 1988, Thalheim Expositions was sold to Gralla Publications, a subsidiary of United News & Media. Gralla was subsequently merged with United News & Media subsidiary Miller Freeman, Inc., to form one of the leading trade publication and trade show management companies in the world.
Shortly after the Thalheims held their first show in New York City, Walter Fletcher began producing small trade shows in Santa Monica, CA, for the Associated Surplus Dealers (ASD), a West Coast trade group representing military surplus retailers. Originally composed primarily of surplus wholesalers, the shows began to expand following a move to Las Vegas. The ASD ultimately added Associated Merchandise Dealers (AMD) to their name, and the ASD/AMD trade shows grew quickly to become the largest variety and general merchandise shows in the country.
In addition to trade show operations, ASD/AMD created the industry's leading publication, the TradeNews. Launched in 1967, the TradeNews is today the true voice of the industry, reaching a monthly audience of 50,000 variety and general merchandise buyers. In 1995, ASD/AMD Trade Shows was acquired by Miller Freeman, Inc., in what was then its largest acquisition to date.
PRESENT
In 1998, Miller Freeman merged its Variety Merchandise and ASD/AMD groups to form the Merchandise Group, the leading creator of dynamic business marketplaces for the variety and general merchandise industry.
Today, Miller Freeman's Merchandise Group produces nine trade shows in Atlantic City, New York, Orlando, and Las Vegas...including the industry's flagship event, the 7,200 booth ASD/AMD Trade Show held twice each year in Las Vegas. In conjunction with this Las Vegas mega-event, the Merchandise Group produces the Mirage Jewelry Show and the Las Vegas Gift Expo, the fastest-growing, most exciting event in the gift marketplace. Our Las Vegas Gift Expo has been an astounding success, and is currently generating a huge buzz in the giftware industry.
The Merchandise Group continues to publish the TradeNews, which is at once a leading source of information and a monthly buyer's resource featuring hundred of companies offering the latest merchandise. We also publish a number of directories and an annual TradeNews Buyers' Guide, listing more than 3,200 companies in over 250 product categories.
FUTURE
Through our trade shows and trade publications, we continue to build dynamic marketplaces, bringing together buyers and sellers. We're also looking toward the future, and have already succeeded in bringing our successful formula to the internet and the world of electronic commerce.
Our newest venture, www.merchandisegroup.com, is a single-stop source of trade show information, including show calendars and regular updates on upcoming shows. TradeNews on the Web features a timely seletion of articles and profiles spotlighting all facets of the variety and general merchandise industry. As the site continues to expand, look for even more timely news features, including updates from the trade show floor. You'll also find late-breaking news drawn from our weekly e-newsletter.
Merchandisegroup.com is also quickly becoming the industry's premier internet marketplace, offering product galleries, CLASSified ads, and a comprehensive merchandise sourcing directory. Our Online Marketplace is a searchable database featuring over 4,000 wholesale vendors of variety and general merchandise in more than 250 unique product categories. This is the industry's number one site for sourcing product.
In the coming weeks, visitors to merchandisegroup.com will be able to share information, concerns, questions, and insights with other small business owners across the country. Our online bulletin board will create the variety and general merchandise industry's first virtual town hall.
We've also entered into a unique partnership culminating in the development of Merchandise-Online.com. Driven by a powerful e-commerce engine, registered buyers can receive fast, free, customized product offers by fax, e-mail, or on the internet. Vendors get access to thousands of pre-qualified Merchandise Group buyers, generating automatic sales leads to targeted markets.
Our future growth won't be limited to the web either. With the popularity of the Las Vegas Gift Expo continuing to spread, we're planning to launch a new gift pavilion at our Atlantic City show and a first-ever toy pavilion at our Orlando show.
The Merchandise Group continues to look for new opportunities to meet our customers needs. There's no better example of this then our new Net 30 card, the first trade show-based factoring program in the industry. Pre-registered buyers will be offered the opportunity to sign up for the Net 30 card, which will allow them to place orders with participating vendors up to a pre-approved credit line. Buyers no longer have to hassle with pre-approval and vendors can feel confident in doing business while enjoying the benefits of increased buying power on the floor.
As we head into a new Millennium, Miller Freeman's Merchandise Group is proud of our half-century of service to our customers, and ready to meet the future needs of our rapidly changing marketplace.
