- IBM Advantis - John R. Opel's appointment as CEO in 1981 coincided with the beginning of a new era of computing. Thanks to the birth of the IBM Personal Computer, or PC, the IBM brand began to enter homes, small businesses and schools. Though not a spectacular machine by technological standards, the IBM PC brought together all of the most desirable features of a computer into one small machine. It offered 16 kilobytes of memory (expandable to 256 kilobytes), one or two floppy disk drives and an optional color monitor.
When designing the PC, IBM for the first time contracted the production of its components to outside companies. The processor chip came from Intel, and the operating system, called DOS (Disk Operating System), came from a 32-person company called Microsoft.
John F. Akers became CEO in 1985 and focused on streamlining operations and redeploying resources. IBM's typewriter, keyboard, and printer business -- the division that created the popular "Selectric" typewriter with its floating "golf ball" type element in the 1960s -- was sold to the investment firm of Clayton, Dubilier & Rice Inc. and became an independent company, Lexmark Inc.
During Akers' tenure, IBM's significant investment in research produced four Nobel Prize winners in physics, achieved breakthroughs in mathematics, memory storage and telecommunications, and made great strides in expanding computing capabilities. The IBM token-ring local area network, introduced in 1985, permitted personal computer users to exchange information and share printers and files within a building or complex. With the further development of the computer, IBM laid a foundation for network computing and numerous other applications.

- Mercator - We're Mercator. The e-business transformation company. A company delivering solid value and enduring benefits in a market that is moving with enormous speed.
We help companies in every industry transform their business operations to participate in the new economy. How do we do this? By providing software that makes it possible for all of their applications to operate in concert - not only with one another, but with the applications of customers, partners, net markets and the rest of the e-business community.
This expanded approach to application integration is what we call "transforming the commerce chain." It is a view of the integration requirement that is far more extensive than B2B integration (B2Bi) or enterprise application integration (EAI) can possibly satisfy. Transforming the commerce chain requires an integration solution that can be deployed across all business interactions no matter where they reside.
A Different Point of View
Transforming the commerce chain also requires a solution that comes from a different point of view. A point of view that is unique, powerful and reflective of real-world business transformation issues.
That's not a bad description of our software. Our software is anchored by a powerful vision of how application integration must be done to deliver lasting benefits. We focus on solving the most difficult integration problem - resolving fundamental differences in the structure, content and meaning of the information that needs to be exchanged - completely independent of the technology layers used to connect applications.
We provide a single integration architecture that gives customers unprecedented agility in responding to change across the entire commerce chain. This agility translates directly to the major e-business objectives of every company - rapid response to new market requirements, first-mover advantage in deployment of new technologies and seamless adaptation to new business models.
Outstanding Market Acceptance
Our success in helping customers achieve lasting benefits in transforming their commerce chains is well documented. Major companies in every industry use our products to integrate their applications both within and beyond their corporate boundaries, including American Express, Bank One, Eli Lilly, General Motors, The Home Depot, IBM, Lockheed Martin, and Texas Instruments to name just a few.
Our list of partners is equally impressive. It includes Compaq, Deloitte Consulting, IBM, Lawson, Mitsui, Oracle, PricewaterhouseCoopers and SAP, all of them on the forefront of the e-business transformation movement.
Behind our success are people who bring an unprecedented breadth of e-business integration experience. Our R&D team is powered by recognized leaders in web application integration, e-commerce integration and secure messaging technologies. We combine a keen understanding of the real-world issues of e-business transformation with a product vision that is fresh, exciting and profound.
- Mondex International - Through the world, notes and coins remain the most common method of payment. Despite the increasing popularity of credit and debit cards, cash offers three obvious benefits: it is universally accepted, there is no need for authorization and provides an instant transfer of value.
Electronic cash is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to notes and coins, because it offers added convenience, and the costs involved for banks and retailers are greatly reduced.
Mondex offers the most technologically advanced electronic cash system in existence and its unique security architecture enables a range of functionality not offered by any other electronic cash scheme.
Mondex can be used for simple, everyday cash transactions. The Mondex electronic cash system operates on a smart card - a plastic card which looks like an ordinary debit or credit card which stores information on a microchip.
The microchip contains a 'purse' in which Mondex value is held electronically. The purse is divided into five separate pockets, allowing up to five different currencies to be held on the card at any one time. The microchip also contains the Mondex SECURITY programmes; these protect transactions between one Mondex card and another.
Being electronic, Mondex provides significant advantages: it can be transferred over a telephone line or the Internet; the microchip maintains a record of the last ten transactions and the electronic cash can be locked into the Mondex card using a code chosen by the user.
Mondex electronic cash can be transferred directly to a retailer, merchant or other outlet to pay for goods or services, and like cash, Mondex enables transactions between individuals, without the need for banks or other third parties.
Mondex electronic cash benefits consumers, retailers and issuers alike, and is already enjoyed by people in many parts of the world.
